Clinic Driving: how to train my mini for the sulky

At the 15th of March 2008, the ICAMH had organized a clinic where you could learn to train your horse in driving. This clinic has been given, without charge, by Angelique van Nederpelt, for which the ICAMH thanks her very much!

Angelique trains her horses according to the most horse friendly and safe driving system, known as the “Achenbach system”, a system of rein handling described by Mr Achenbach (1861-1936) that is composed of various driving systems.

The horse friendly part expresses itself amongst others by fact that the total system is based on the giving of the outside rein when turning, instead of only taking with the inside rein. The basic hand is the left hand, which on straight lines is being supported by the right hand that is being placed in front of it in the user position. The safety shows itself through the fact that the right hand in principle is available all the time. You can use it to give signs in traffic, but also in case of an emergency.

During this day, the entire basics to get your horse ready for driving could be learned. A very interesting clinic for everybody who likes to drive their horse in a responsible way!

Course of the day

The clinic was held at the home of Claudia Vermeulen in Zevenbergschenhoek, the Netherlands. From 9:00 hours on, everybody was welcome.

Because a lot of people had travelled far, we started the day with a cup of coffee or tea and homemade egg cakes. At about ten o’clock, Angelique van Nederpelt started off her lecture on putting the American and the European Miniature Horse to the cart and driving.

Various subjects were discussed during this theoretical morning:

  • How to go about the horse
  • Senses
  • Exterior
  • The harness
  • Driving responsibly

After lunch, we went to another location for the practical part of the clinic.

There, Angelique showed us how to harness a horse and how to familiarize it with the cart. After learning all that, the real stuff started.

Barthy Lennings and Susan Bijl with their minis had joined us to let us get the feel of driving. You could try different kinds of drivings: the sulky, the Jerald cart and even driving two horses in a tandem.

By six o’clock in the evening, we had all returned to the first location. There, the table had been set for a drink and a nice hot meal – something everybody could to with by that time!

At the end of the day, Angelique van Nederpelt was thanked warmly for this great day, and all participants received an attendance certificate, after which everybody returned to their homes and horses tired, but content with all the new knowledge and experiences.
