Wayne G. Hipsley: Top Competition at 2009 Extravaganza
Quality horses and keen competition are the only ways to describe the 2009 ICAMH May American Miniature Horse Show. With exhibitors coming from five European countries, the ICAMH Miniature Extravaganza was the place to show the best the breeders have to offer. Whether it be the in-hand horses, the liberty, trail obstacle or driving, the competitors were very impressive in their preparation and presentation of their horses. The showing of American Miniature Horses in Europe has come a very long way in the past 10 years of my judging in this part of the world. And certainly not to be overlooked is the show management team which complimented the competition with a very well managed show, establishing a positive environment for breeders and owners of the American Miniature Horse.
Amateur Classes
It was a thrill and wonderful opportunity to judge a strong amateur division of halter horses of all ages. In evaluating these classes the quality of the horses could be 3 to 4 horses “deep in quality”. This is a very significant observation, and a very high compliment to the breeders and owners of the horses competing in these classes. It is much more fun for a judge to evaluate horses on the positive traits, and that is what I experienced in judging these classes.
And yes, the showing skills and ring craft made the differences in the final analysis of the placings of these quality presentations by the amateurs. It is my observation that many of these amateur handlers would be highly competitive in the US show rings. The simple statement is the European breeders and owners have come a very long way in a short period of time to advance their personal skills in showing horses as well as developing a sharp eye for quality horses.
Junior Champion and Supreme
The line-up to select the Junior Champion and Reserve fillies was very impressive, with over 12 entries returning to the ring. On a given day, many of the placings could be reserved between first and second place getters, and much of the final selection was how the horses were being presented. This impressive line-up is a tribute to the AMHA owners in Europe and their ability to present quality American Miniature Horses.
The selection of the supreme halter horse went to a very exceptional young stallion, cleverly prepared and shown. When viewing this colt, one of the key features is the set and length of his neck with an arch fitting into a very refined, yet masculine head. The overall quality of all of the horses in the supreme halter line-up was exceptional making the selection of this colt a well earned award.
Performance Classes
The performance classes were well entered from liberty to trail obstacle, and country pleasure driving to jumping. It is vital for breeders and owners to demonstrate the athletic ability of these Miniature horses, because all of the horses cannot be considered winners in conformation, whereas the performances is designed for all horses, regardless of conformation. Therefore, we are easily reminded they must be more than “pretty”, they must be athletes.
Pleasure driving at the show had very good examples of country and single horses, some of the best I have seen in Europe. Both youth and amateur classes had quality performances by all participants, where the emphasis of judging could be based on the positive aspects of the performances. And exhibitors in the driving obstacle classes turned in very good performances with a challenging course set by show management. In all the driving obstacle classes the horses and exhibitors found the challenge allowed them to build confidence in their ability at driving through obstacles.
Training Clinic
And, yes, there were many newcomers to the show ring, young and old alike. At the training clinic on Monday after the horse show, over 16 horses and their handlers worked through a variety of phases of showing their horses. The interest and desire to be successful in the show ring was apparent with these people.
The main focus of the clinic was to improve the showmanship skills for presenting the in-hand, halter horse. And, increasing their ring skills on the finer points of when and where a judge expects to see the qualities of the horse. Some of the exhibitors wanted to discuss conformation issues related to their horses and how to overcome these weaknesses while showing. The group was fantastic to work with, they had a spirit and desire to work to achieve success, to become better at the art of showing horses, and many succeeded.
The participants in the showmanship and trail obstacle training sessions were remarkable in how quickly they improved. I know at the next show, the entries in the showmanship class will be increased, and making it tougher for the judges to arrive at their conclusions.
It is also important to comment on the lessons we covered during the liberty phase of the training clinic. Many learned how important their ring position is to getting their horses to perform and for the exhibitors not to have their personal performance a circus act. These fundamentals will make a difference in future liberty performances.
As with most exhibitors around the world, very few understand the standards the judges are looking for in the show ring. Only a few have read the rulebook, and of those, only a few understand the interpretation of the rules, this is a universal concern. Therefore, when teaching at these clinics, it is important to emphasize the information is being conveyed is from a judges’ point of view. And remember, exhibitors are not required to attend an educational program before showing like judges, so exhibitors learn by trial and error, a very poor system, so the clinic hosted by the ICAMH was important for all participants.
Positive Thoughts
When I look back on the development and growth of the American Miniature Horse in Europe, it was only a few years ago when the entire process started. In those days there was only one club putting on one show each year. Now, the ICAMH club is hosting 3 to 4 horse shows each year in Holland and Germany. And in 2009, ICAMH will be host club for the first AMHA European Regional Championship Horse Show. This is quite a testimony to the advancement of the breed in Europe as well as the leadership and support from breeders.
My personal thanks for the wonderful hospitality and support from show management. My experiences with this show tell me the breeders and owners in this region of Europe are well served by the ICAMH and its leadership.
